Can you rent an apartment after bankruptcy in Houston?
Yes. A bankruptcy shows up on your credit report, and an automated screening system may turn you down for it. But many renters who filed are in a better position to pay rent than before, because old debts are gone or on a plan.
Some properties understand that and will review your application by hand. The challenge is knowing which ones. That is what we do.
Chapter 7 and Chapter 13
With a Chapter 7, most unsecured debts are discharged, and some properties see a recent discharge as a fresh start. With a Chapter 13, you are on a court-approved repayment plan, and some properties want to see that you are keeping up with it.
Either way, tell your Counselor which chapter you filed and roughly when. It helps us steer you toward properties that are open to your situation.
How we help after a bankruptcy
Done Deal Cosign has helped Houston renters since 2014, and more than 10,000 people have been approved through us. A Counselor reviews your rental and credit history, matches you with Partner Properties that consider renters after bankruptcy and backs your application with the property.
You complete the qualifying forms first. If you are not pre-approved within 7 days, the Initial Fee is refunded. You then choose your apartment from our 96 Partner Properties.
- Tell us about the bankruptcy and anything else on your history.
- Get matched with Partner Properties that review your full situation.
- Get your pre-approval decision, then pick your apartment.
If there is more than a bankruptcy
Bankruptcy often comes with other things: an eviction, a broken lease or a balance owed to a former landlord. Our general guideline is two or fewer rental issues, and credit problems alone are often easier to work through. Every case is reviewed individually, so call even if your situation feels complicated.
What it costs
We charge an Initial Fee and a Lease Assurance Fee. The amounts depend on your rental history and the Partner Property's rates, and we explain both before you commit.

Frequently asked questions
Do any Houston apartments accept bankruptcy?
Yes. Some properties review a bankruptcy case by case instead of denying automatically. Our Partner Properties are a good place to start.
Does a discharged bankruptcy still count against me?
It can still appear on your credit report, but many properties view a discharge more favorably than open debt. Tell your Counselor when it was discharged.
Can I rent during a Chapter 13 repayment plan?
Often, yes. Some properties want to see that you are current on the plan. Your Counselor will match you with properties that consider it.
Will a bankruptcy and an eviction together stop me?
Not necessarily. Our general guideline is two or fewer rental issues, and every case is reviewed individually.
What does it cost?
An Initial Fee and a Lease Assurance Fee, based on your history and the Partner Property's rates. If you are not pre-approved within 7 days, the Initial Fee is refunded.
